Functional Art

A blogging friend requested a couple of spoon rests, without a lot of direction on colors. She said she would be happy with any oopsies I had made for others that didn’t quite turn out. But I can’t do that. So I set out to make her spoon rests.

I started with bright green, yellow and red paints. Added a little brown to each to reduce some of the brightness. And then also used white. I made enough of these colors to make three spoon rests. I mailed two to the friend yesterday. Meanwhile, I sent a picture to another friend because the wife said she would like the colors. She did, so I went all out for some stuff for her.

The spoon rest, two trivets, and six coasters. I offered her the choice of four of the coasters and one of the trivets. Here they are.

The trivets (I call this functional art, but I don’t think the trivets are really functional. The gloss I use is heat resistant, but I don’t think so heat resistant that a hot pan or pot could be put on one of these and not ruin the surface) …

I really like how these turned out. The mix of colors turned out better than I thought they would and, for the most part, I was able to maintain good patterns on all of the pours.

At the moment, I’ve worked through all of the orders I got from friends and family over the last couple of months. It’s time for me to decide if I want to create a website to see if I can sell some of this to a wider audience. What do you think? (I know this … I have a hell of a lot of paint that I need to do something with.)
