KingMidget's Ramblings

Pull up a chair. Let's talk.

If You’re Not One of Us

First the caveats:  I’ll be the first to admit there are extremists on all sides of the political spectrum and the ones on the left say some pretty horrible things.  I’ll also be the first to admit that most of the people referenced in the links below aren’t exactly household names or people high up in the Republican Party, but …

One of the things that bothers me is how quick the right wing in this country is to attack those who don’t hold their views and say things like.  Liberals aren’t patriots.  President Obama hates America.  President Obama is intentionally trying to destroy America.  Liberals don’t love America.  Why is that the case?  Because we have different views than the right wing and if we have different views we simply cannot be capable of the same level of love for our country (or maybe I should say their (meaning the right wing) country, because anything less is unacceptable to them).  We are not patriots because we see different solutions.  We are evil because we have different objectives.  We are … well, simply not as worthy.

You want proof … Here you go.  Yes, these are mostly bloggers and commentators.  Not Republican leaders or officeholders, but still.  Really.  Every American held captive anywhere overseas is supposed to be rescued by our government (including, by the way, the former soldier who was arrested in Mexico for illegally bringing guns into the country), but … well, except for those liberal type people we don’t agree with.  And, particularly, if that person is somebody who believes that maybe, just maybe, Israel is not the unbridled, 100% beacon of democracy and freedom the right wing would like us to believe.  Anti-semitic and anti-Jewish because she believed in helping Palestinians.  And, hence, she deserved to die while held in captivity by ISIS.  She basically asked for it.  Yes.  If you’re not one of them … the right wing thinks you deserve to die.

Sadly, it’s not just whacko bloggers who think this.  Many of the things I said a couple of paragraphs above come out of the mouths of Congressmen, United States Senators, and numerous Republican elected officials across the country.  Obama hates America.  He isn’t a patriot.  He is trying to ruin our country.  He should be impeached.  And why.  Because he is not one of them.  He does not agree with them.  He does not hold the same beliefs and positions as them.  He believes in different solutions than them.  And, if you’re not one of them … well, you’re just not worthy.  Of anything.

It is this kind of view that is destroying any ability for us to have reasonable discussions and reach agreement on how to proceed in this country.  It is simply impossible to negotiate with people who believe you are the enemy if you disagree with them.

Sometimes I’m very grateful to live in Canada… (Though I could dredge up some choice “Harperisms” pretty quickly!)

A thought to ponder. The vast majority of Repubs are not conservatives. Just a bunch of folks looking to fill their bank accounts and their donors accounts with our money. 🙂

Can’t disagree with that. They have perverted the traditional definition of conservative.

My dad passed years ago, he would have gone postal seeing how politics has devolved. He was even right of me!

I am a lifelong Democrat who thinks there is nothing better than having a real debate and real competition in our political system. I desperately want a reasonable Republican Party that offers real alternatives. My party and its leaders are far from perfect. But the current Republican Party offers me virtually nothing as an alternative. Their primal scream and complete rejection of traditional conservatism renders them completely unpalatable. I have friends who are good and decent people who are Republicans and I see the current party leadership and what they are doing and don’t understand how they can continue to vote for Republicans.

I just want to be left alone to care for me and my family. I don’t want the government telling me who to care for. God bless those who see things differently.

Oh, and one other thing … I agree with your comment about how politics has devolved. And that’s on both parties as well as all of the commentators and us, the voters, for allowing it to happen.
