Couldn’t Have Said It Better

I walked into my office today and found the most wonderful of gifts on my desk.  A book.  A BOOK!  There was nothing on the book to indicate who it was from, but I’ll take it.  The book is It’s Even Worse Than It Looks: How the American Constitutional System Collided with the New Politics of Extremism.  It’s written by Thomas E. Mann and Norman J. Ornstein.

During my entire adult life, which dates back to the Ronald Reagan presidency, Norman Orntein has been one of those experts whose opinion is frequently sought out on talking head shows and network news.  He is a political scientist in the true sense of the word.  I also believe he is probably one of the more balanced commentators out there.  He is currently affiliated, as he has been for quite some time, with the American Enterprise Institute, which is … well, to give you an idea of its politics, John Bolton, Newt Gingrich and Lynn Cheney are also affiliated with AEI.  yes, it’s an extremely Republican-leaning organization.  Which makes this statement in the book, co-authored by Mr. Ornstein, all the more amazing:

one of the two major parties, the Republican Party, has become an insurgent outlier — ideologically extreme; contemptuous of the inherited social and economic policy regime; scornful of compromise; unpersuaded by conventional understanding of facts, evidence, and science; and dismissive of the legitimacy of its political opposition.  When one party moves this far from the center of American politics, it is extremely difficult to enact policies responsive to the country’s most pressing challenges.

This is the truth and reality of the American political system.  When you have Norman Ornstein, of the American Enterprise Institute, saying this about the Republican Party, you’d think it would wake somebody up.  Maybe produce some kind of change in how things are.  Doesn’t seem to be happening yet, though, does it?
